Eh, number one, it wasn't my question; it was his own.
Number two, his question was, "Can you think of many times in your life when everyone around you went one way, and you disregarded them and went the other?" Saying "Many people do" in response to that makes no sense; "Many people do are able to think of ..."? "Do" would have been fine with an action verb such as "to experience," but he worded his question with a linking verb, so "do" makes no sense.
