It is extemely close in the Senate but when Jeffords of VT changed from Republican to Independent the democrats resumed majority control. I think there are 48 reps and 49 dems now with just one Independent (Jeffords). That's why Dashle became Majority leader again in June.
The House might pass it, but that kind of bill most likely wouldn't pass in the Senate because Jeffords is more likely to vote against it.
You are right about Gore volunteering. He was brave enough to go over. I agree that it was dangerous no matter what. That's was great of him but even so, there are accounts of him receiving special treatment that an average soldier would not get.
This is probably the horseshit you were referring to:

Okay, Gore is your president. So if you were an American and Gore signed the bill would you agree with it?
