If I were going to build a house I would definitely try to incorporate solar and be off the grid. Actually, if you generate excess electricity you can pump it back into the grid and the electric company has to send you a check!
Been reading some cool articles about fuel cells; apparently they make home-sized units now. And there are generators that run off of natural gas, so with one of those big propane tanks you could generate your own electricity.
Think how much juice gets wasted simply via resistance/heat over the course of transmitting electricity throughout the continental US! I believe that decentralization is the future.
