When automobiles were evented, they were considered a high-technology solution to the horse and buggy. Horses are noisy and shit all over the street, and they are slower and cause more congestion as a result. Pollution from the internal combustion engine was not an issue because early automobile pioneers did not foresee everyone owning an automobile. It was a luxury.

So at the time, automobiles were considered very progressive. 4s most likely were proposing people use automobiles rather than polluting the environment with horses, not to mention it was cruelty to animals :-)
