I respect plants in that they give me life and nourishment and all that. I couldn't live without eating plants, but I can without animals. When I grow my gardens in the spring I have a lot of respect for the plants growing there. I don't step on them, I give them water and inspect them daily for signs of deterioration and etc etc.
The difference is that eating a plant isn't cruel, when killing something that feels pain is.
