Tobacco - keeps metabolism up and people thin. Calms nerves, etc.
Just because something has no benefits doesn't mean it should be illegal.
Alcohol is legal because the crazies who said it was of the devil were marginalized. Alcohol was and is the most popular... Became part of American culture and when they tried to ban it as a drug it just didn't take. Use of other drugs such as herion and yadda yadda is not as widespread and rampant and has never been mainstream, which makes it easy for the the people pulling the strings to criminalize and denounce as evil. Tobacco and alchohol are both drugs. Here's alcohol where they can advertise about how great it is, how you can have a good time and get it on with vaguely attractive twins (isn't there incest implied in that in that whole ridiculous fantasy, anyway?) and yadda yadda yadda. On the other hand, tobacco is advertised on TV as pure evil. I've seen an ad where they say "Cigarrettes are the only product that doesn't have a list of ingredients on the package." Cigarrettes are also the only product where the makers of that product are forced to pay for "ads" that say "don't buy our product."
