*****i don't think it is disatistaction with body appearance. when people are extremely dissatified with their body, and are motivated to change it, they go to the gym, try to eat healthy, (or diet), tan, get liposuction, face-lifts. well some of this is a bit extreme, but you get the idea. tattoos are more of an expression of what is within, rather than a compensation...

****common motivations: it's fun, to identify with a team...(like the little olympics tattoos), to express oneself, to rebel. ... i personally decided not to get a tatoo, because i change so much from year to year, i know if i got something i loved this year, next year i would hate it. i experiment with fake tatoos. its fun babe, an outer expression of the inner. well, i guess some people do it just cause it's a fad...
you can make a strong statement with tattoos, since they are permanent. i know this guy with a serial number tattood at the base of his head. he shaves his head, and for him its a statement against being a part of the unaware masses, blindly following the media, and societal ideals. or something like that, i haven't seen him in a while...
