I have experienced times of DEEP doubt about my artwork. As a 5w4, my self-esteem is VERY wrapped up in my competency in my area of specialization. Anytime I see someone better than myself, I feel very competitive and inferior. (It’s just fortunate that these people are few and far between). I am a VERY harsh self-critic. Objectivity means facing a sometimes brutal reality… but I’ve faced a lot of it and my skin is now pretty damn thick.

4s do have a hard time being realistic but as much as they are capable of hating their art and feeling worthless… they are also capable of loving their art and feeling superior. True, many spend a great deal of time in the hate/worthless stage… but others spend a great deal of time in the love/superior stage. And things like the ‘message’ can be more important than the delivery. (In which case, 4ish idealism can spare them for dealing with feelings of inferiority regarding their abilities.)

What drives me crazy as a 5 artist? 4s dominate the scene so they do a lot of protecting the emotions of the particularly temperamental. As a result, competitions are sometimes self-esteem awards… given to well-liked people but unmerited artworks.

Guess I feel like rambling… since we’re talking about art… when I was in college I had a professor who was a classic 5w4, INTP and he was a harsh bastard during critique. If an artwork was sloppy or just bad he was known to actually tear things off of it or take it apart while talking about why it was a failure. (It was a 3D Design class.) Many, many feeling types left his class crying… type 4 girls particularly. But my god, did I appreciate it… even when it hurt terribly. I learned FAR more from him than from other teachers that were busy being tactful about people’s feelings.
