![]() Jason and the Golden Fleece - this Greek archetype and Fleurine's relation with Brad Mehldau Jason's mythical story Jason seems to be an archetypical E3 - dr. Oldham calls it 'self-confident style'- task focused action hero; performing daring high energy acts that result in applause from the public when the challenging goal (conquering the legendary Golden Fleece) has been reached. Jason is naively goal focussed and independently self-directed because of over-confidence in his own capabilites. Just like so many entrepreneurs who start up a new business they are (and of course need to be) not impressed/conscious of the risk of failing the new enterprise entails. E3 people seem to succeed in doing things deemed 'impossible' by others (that's why they get applause afterwards.) Enthusiastic Jason spontaneously cried 'Of course I can do that!'. Speaking our modern language we would define the adventure as a 'project' which Jason undertook with as main 'resources' the ship called Argo and the project-workers - who were as is often the case with E3's 'friends' from his personal social network - called Argonauts.
Also Jason's 'love relation' with the daughter of the guardian of the Golden Fleece, king Colchis, is very much a situational, opportunistic affair. When Jason has reached his goal with the help of poor Medea who betrays her family to help Jason, he dumps her. He's too restless to have a quiet homey life with Medea and wants to start new 'projects'. The princess of Corinthe, Glauce is instrumental to the advancement of his career and he falls in love with her. This situational/chameleontic quality seems very typical for E3's and I guess is often misunderstood. The E3 REALLY often falls in love with someone who has the potential to enhance his/her image, this is -often- not out of conscious opportunistic reasons. When we think about it the feeling of 'love' is unconsiously related to more fundamental inner emotional needs and therefore different for every character style. A good example of an E3 falling in love with somebody enhancing her career is Dutch jazz singer Fleurine ('God, this is so hip, I wanna go to New York') who impressed the world with her 'Meant to be' debut; who has a her hurried style and fell of the stairs of the Village Vanguard club in New York on her rollerblades literally bumped into very famous E4-ish jazz pianist Brad Mehldau ('Punk has a jazzy ethos. Jazz was already jazz before punk was even punk'). Now they perform together.
The goal of Jason; capturing the the heavily guarded and elusive Golden Fleece - which was linked with the right to sit on the prestigious king's throne - was so attractive to him because it represents the E3 energy of public leadership. The Golden Fleece was the gift of Hermes the E3-ish god of traders and thiefs/liars. Jason is attracted to the outer image the fleece provided to its owner. Just like Nike shoes enhance the group status of children at school. When the ram with Golden Fleece died and left for heaven; a new star configuration appeared in heavens; Aries. This story has also a definite E3-ish ring on it. When the energetic animal left its shining golden coat on earth and the golden surface image of the fleece was no longer available to him, there was not so much inner value left: the new stars did only shine moderately. This is a pointer to the risk with the E3 character style: that of of superficiality: focussing on image enhancing effects without deep inner content or personal vison. In todays recruitment efforts to attract new managers to companies the E3 recruiters claim that management jobs are good for your 'personal development'. This is a lie. A survey among Dutch managers however showed that their knowledge of culture and history is extremely low…thats what happens when you focus on allocating money and people for (too) many years. These are the people when travelling take pictures of the Borubudur temple and when home they show it to you enthusiastically without even the faintest idea what's the story and philopsophy behind the temple images. Todays public opinion seems to have forgotten and glorifies the enterpreneurial spirit of the E3 character. Ironically the G.F.-symbol today is used in a way that confirms the truth of the deeper original meaning. It has started in the late medieval period, when European knights took the symbol of the Golden Fleece out of the cupboard of history, and started using it as a prestigeous 'brand' for international networking and image purposes; comparable with todays The Rotary of The Lions business clubs. In jewelry shops you can buy your own copy of the golden fleece in the form of golden pendant with chain as image enhancing necklace. Jan
