![]() Charlie Brown is a melancholic character but also warm and kind-hearted, however shy, reserved, clumsy and constantly depressed, he is "a person of who other people naturally take advantage of", also known as "the kid with the funny name" or "the rounded head kid", he's always target of laughs and jokes by the rest of the gang. He is exceptionally "round" and mediocre and attracts readers with his low-key attitude. He'll never win a baseball game, never be able to fly his kite and never conquer the heart of the little red-haired girl, who is probably unaware of him. Charlie Brown worries and is anxious, his thoughts are often occupied by the meaning of life. Well mannered, caring and friendly, he is also the unheard coach of the not-so-good Peanut's team. No one pays attention to his leadership role. Charlie is ‘a good man’, but also the archetypical unsuccesful person; we can compare his character style with the protagonist in the Bridget Jones’s Diary movie: sighs often, seems to feel hopeless, staring in front of him, pondering, having low self esteem, insecure and very aware of the sadness of life, seeing the crazyness, the stupididy, the egoism, the mistaken beliefs, the foolish hopes, the narcissism (Snoopy!) and the meanness (Lucy!) in the social interactions of the children around him. Charlie is also easily disillusioned by things which many other less sensitive people wouldn’t even notice. However he seems to plod on daily and sustain himself amongst the madness. Perhaps that’s what we all can identify with to some extend and he’s loved so much by many? Jan
