Plot Summary for
Hell's Kitchen (1998)
When a robbery goes awry, the bandits all end up in a puddle of blood and only one – Johnny - (Mekhi Phifer) lives and goes to jail for five years. Upon his release, the girlfriend Gloria (Angelina Jolie) wants her new boyfriend Patty (Johnny Whitworth) to kill him. Only trouble is the boy friend knows that the fault was not the ex-con's and can't bring himself to do the town. Meanwhile the ex-con tries to turn his life around by becoming a boxer and training under a former heavyweight contender Lou (William Forsythe).
Assesment of the characters:
- Johnny
He’s the altruistic, empathetic helper; he hasn’t killed Gloria’s brother but doesn’t tell her. Let’s scumbag Patty get away with it.
Assessment: Self Sacrificing Style
- Patty
Patty is the bad boy, the archetypical criminal who was kicked by his father as a child. He’s an egoistic liar and impulsive agressor, has sex with Gloria and her mother Liz.
Assessment:Adventurous Style (an anti social disordered guy)
- Liz
Liz is a self destructive junky. She’s frustrated/negativistic and seems to focus on frustrating others; especially her daughter. A complainer when Jolie tells her the truth; ‘You are allways accusing me’.
Assessment: Leisurely-Contrary-Negativistic Style
- Lou
What about Lou? He’s got brain damage and talks slowly. He seems like an Agressive Style man, who likes to play the bossy coach (‘Are you a punk?’) in a benevolent way. Intimidates Johnny and says he’s only got his muscled body but besides that he’s a nobody.
- Ricky
Ricky is a nice little boy with the wrong father and mother. He feels small and helpless but compensates with ‘big talk’
Assessment: Devoted Style
- Sean
Sean is an agressive racist and rabble rouser.
Assessment: Vigilant Style?
- Gloria (Angelina Jolie)
She’s in despair and wants to kill her ex-lover because she thinks he has killed her little brother. Agressive Style?
