Vulcan visitor Falow really enjoys the suffering of the four officers which he has trapped in a virtual game, putting them in maze, hurting them with gas and putting them in front of several ordeals. The sadism can be seen also in putting Quark in the position to eliminate one of the officers to save the others: ' Choose their path, double their perils!' Falow orders Quark, ' If you don't sacrifice one, all three will be lost!'
In the end its just a sick joke, Quarks cheating on Falow has given him a thin legitimation for this ' punishment' of DS9 officers.
Limiting the behavioral options of people is something a sadist really likes to do.
