Can I take up a point - you asked where I read that Threes have a need to work hard, and
if so, why they have a concern for efficiency?
As for where I read it, every enneagram book that I've read. Maybe Riso doesn't mention
it. If he doesn't, it would confirm my opinion of him.
If one needed a one word description of Threes, one would say 'workaholics.'
The reason Threes need to be efficient is not so that they can take it easy, but so that
they can move onto the next job. A Three's sense of self-worth is based upon achievement,
public achievement if possible. They have very little time for any activity which doesn't
produce concrete results eg emotional relationships. Threes are hag-ridden by the
(unconscious) belief that if they stop getting results everybody will see them as useless
slobs.
