In Reply to: The 8's. James Bond, Will Hunting, Emperor and Darth Vader, The Godfather posted by Andrew Mabey 8w7 on November 19, 1998 at 00:29:16:

: As a true 8, I cried when I first read the summary of an 8 since it hit so close to home. History, I am a high school student, ranked first, set a new record in number of AP classes taken, going to an Ivy League school next year, Student Body Pres, etc....

: My list of "8" character include:

: James Bond (although headed in a 5 direction)
: Will Hunting (Obvious 8, his closed personality is a direct result of his
: abuse as a child.

: Emperor and Darth Vader 8's with negative of 5's
: Han Solo 8 integrating to 2, in love with Leia a two/three
: The Godfather, head of mafia, need I say more

: Muad 'dib (Paul Atreides) from Dune (obvious, obvious eight) The Kwisatz Haderach (Ultimate man) how much more 8 can you get, the destined leader of the galaxy.

: And any book or movie based on Hemmingway, the literary eight

: Tell me what you think of this list, if you are an eight, you probably cried like a baby during Good Will Hunting, Dune, and fantasized about being James Bond.

Andrew, the last thing in the world I would want to do is offend you since you're clearly taking an interest in this transformative field of study (and also because 8's respond vehemently when offended!) But you're off-base on several of your designations. James Bond exhibits 8ish behavior but that is common among counterphobic 6's. Examine the attitude with which he does things. He usually jokes, not sneers. He's not out for self-aggrandizement, but rather he is a loyalistic secret service agent. The same goes for the character of Will Hunting. Will also SEEMS 8ish, but his compulsive joking and deep denial also brand him as a counterphobic 6 (with a brilliant 5 wing). You're on target with Darth Vader (8/9) and Han Solo (8/7), but the Godfather is not a core 8 despite his 8ish position and behavior. Don Vito was always played as a downplaying 9/8 by Brando and De Niro, while Don Michael was played as a scheming 5 by Pacino. As for Paul Atreides, he's a classic 3/2, not an 8. His eagerness is to please his family and fulfill his role, not just to kick ass. Remember, just because 8's like to be in charge doesn't always mean they're good at it. I have personally met far more bad 8 leaders than good ones. It takes a while for them to "awaken". I do think you're right on about Hemingway though.

Thanks for posting!
