Songbird Patti LaBelle has split from her manager hubby Armstead Edwards - after 30 years of marriage. "Everybody is shocked," says a friend of the 55-year-old soul diva. "People are just speechless over this. I mean, they've been together for so long. So few marriages last -especially in show biz." Ann Stead has been Patti's manager throughout her long career. And he was by her side when she dominated the charts with her disco anthem Lady Marmalade.
Patty had complained to pals that her husband was too controlling when it came to her life - and she was getting tired of it after 30 years of marriage.
"Armstead can be completely controlling at times," said one friend."Once, Richard Pryor gave her a car when they were on tour together. Armstead just flipped out. He didn't like Patti to do anything or have anything that he wasn't control1ing.Lately, he decided he didn't
want Patti to wear fur any more. When she told him she wanted to get a newfur, he told her she couldn't get it. "She's a grown woman -and she's the breadwinner. She should- n't have to ask permission to buy something she wants. . "Patti was only 25 when she got married. Even though she's won awards, had gold records and traveled a1l over the world, she's never rea1ly been on her own."There were other signs that the marriage was not as rock-solid as it has been in the past. For example, last November the couple suddenly put their luxury Los Angeles condo up for sale. They had spent 10 years in the 2,600-square-foot apartment, which comes complete with marble steam room.
"Patti and Armstead have always been so family oriented," says the friend. "But people grow apart."
They have a 26-year-old son, Zuri, who is in the music business, and two adopted sons, Stanley, 36, and Dodd, 40. The couple have also raised two of Patti's nieces, Stacey, 35, and Billy, 38, who were her late sister Jackie's kids. Just a fewyears ago, Patti described Armstead, a former schoolteacher, as "a really good man." And she added: "He thinks I'm crazy, and he's such a square, that's what makes our marriage work. Opposites attract." For a long time, says the friend, Patti and Armstead tried to work out the troubles in their marriage.
"But now, she has gotten to the point in her life where she has to start living for herself," says the friend. "You get to the point when y ou realize there isn't that much time left and you've got to do what you've got to do." Patti has already seen her share of heartbreak. Three ofher sisters died of cancer in the '80s -all in their early 40s. Before she settled down with Armstead, singer Otis Wilson of the Temptations proposed to her. But she tumed him down because he wanted a more "traditional" home life. A spokesperson for Patti and Armstead issued a statement describing the split as amicable.

It seems to me that Patti represents the character style Oldham calls 'self-sacrificing/altruistic/self-defeating (enneagrammists would say E2 or E9); and Armstead seems to correspond to the 'conscientious style' (or E1 as most enneagrammists would say). Anybody knows Patti's life line and has additional information about her and her husband?
