Sam Mendes: Kevin I had in my head from the beginning. I wasn't quite sure about Annette when I read it, but then I came back to pitch the studio. I was in a hotel and I was bored one afternoon and started watching Mars Attacks! I thought she was hilarious in it. I had no idea she had that kind of comic sparkle to her. That kind of tipped the balance.

Sam Mendes: I saw over a hundred kids, male and female, for those parts. There were 10 or 15 actors who were all of an incredibly high standard. Casting is spirit as much as looks, and Thora understood the girl so well. She was so deft and soulful. Wes walked in at the last minute. He didn't have a professional photograph of himself; he just came in with a Polaroid. He does three lines in Beloved and that's it, really, so he's 100% new. He was as much a surprise to me as I think he's going to be to the audience, because I think he's quite exceptional.
