I would say "NewsRadio" is a good example of variety.

Its a show in which each character has a great personality traits that are developed both well and with good humor... Here's a rundown as I seem them:

DAVE NELSON (Dave Foley): The news director. I see him as probably a 1. He is pragmatic and knows what is right, what is wrong, and what gets the job done. He is loyal and attentive.. I also see a bit of a 2 in him because he can be sensitive to others and has the need to be loved, as well as 6, in that he can be somewhat paranoid and neurotic. He takes his job seriously, and strives to gain the respect of the staff.

MR. JAMES: Station owner/millionaire. 7/8. He treis often to act big and powerful, and as someone who need no one else, but there seems to be a desire to be happy and seek out what he is missing in life.

LISA MILLER: A difficult and intriguing character. I would say she's probably a 3. She is more or less a career-woman of sorts, and strived to succeed. But lately in the program, she has abandoned this in her emotion-driven marriage to the "evil" Johnny Johnson. (aka Putty from Seinfeld)

JOE: The all-pupose elctrician. Creative and inventive in his ways. Unabashed in his approaches to women. I would say he's a 2.

MATTHEW: The goofy weirdo. Most likely a 5/4. Asking questions, (even if he never finds out the answer) Feels he must do what he can to prove to his co-workers that he is not as foolish and clutzy as he appears to be, only to become more foolish and clutzy...

BETH: Easily pegged as a 4. Dresses outlandishly, tries to be different. She is very emotional and is open with everyone else.

MAX LOUIS: (Jon Lovitz): Newsman. A 3/4, based on the negative aspects of both. Fears being rejected, and is delusional, self-centered, envious and unstable.

BILL MACNEIL: (formerly on the show, played by the late Phil Hartman) 1-3-8. High self-esteem, obnxious at times, pompous, and overbearing. Needs no one else to be happy, but willing to take on duties as leader (8), feels he is always right (1), and is self confident, arrogant and loves the spotlight and hates to lose (3)..

-------
As for Home Improvement, I can prettymuch agree with the above assesments...

Tim Taylor: 3/8
Jill Taylor: a tough one...1/2/6
Brad (eldest son): 1/7
Randy (middle son, now not in cast): 4/5
Mark (youngest son): 4

Wilson (neighbor): 4
Al: (Tim's friend): 2/3
Heidi: (assistant): 9 (though not much character development to tell)
-------

: With the ? in the title I mean to ask: are there sitcoms that are not E7-ish in their overall aura? MASH seems very E7-ish, Married with Children is E8-ish 'caricature' humor? What do you think?
