Enneagram Movie Board Archive Anyone remember Gary Numan? :)Posted by Paranoid on March 05, 2000 at 01:34:07: In Reply to: Another style posted by Areia on February 29, 2000 at 02:01:02: : While I agree with Jan that the "sensitive" and "mercurial" styles are present in New Wave, there's also a "paranoid" side to it, particularly in some of its roots in the late '70s. I immediately think of David Byrne and Talking Heads, who are certainly considered forerunners of the New Wave explosion in the early '80s. Before New Weave went all popped-out, it had a dark, cerebral bent to it that I think early Heads demonstrates well (though they have a certain 3-6-9 aesthetic-- a focus on hysteria and numbness as a result of a screwed-up society-- that is also very interesting). Perhaps this "paranoid" take on New Wave springs from the Heads' semi-involvement in punk culture, as they shared the same venue as the Ramones and others at CBGB's in New York. Devo is a terrific example of another New Wave band following in the Heads' footsteps. Of course, there's the question "what exactly is New Wave, anyway?" But I suppose that's a matter of interpretation. : -- Areia
