American Pie (2000) - bingo; movie were you can see all nine characterstyles in action!

After analyzing some texts on real life therapeutical patients; its good to watch something more superficail and amusing. This comedy about teenagers who become driven by their sex hormones into all kinds of weird behavior IS amusing. Its much better than Something about Mary (there is also a sperm joke), lots of character styles and most of them are so clear that they can be matched with Oldham and enneagram typology.

The plot:
At a high-school party, four friends (Jim, Kevin, Finch, and Oz) find that losing their collective virginity isn't as easy as they had thought. But they still believe that they need to do so before college. To motivate themselves, they enter a pact to try to be the first to "score." And of course, the senior prom is their last best chance. As the fateful date draws near, the boys wonder who among them will get lucky. More importantly, do they really want to do it at all?

The movie characters psycho-analyzed:

Vicky - E3
Strong career focus, whether or not she will have sex for the first time is determined by the opinions of other people (kinda marketing research), and the sex act is seen as a task to be fulfilled, with no real deep love visible; she stops her relation when she has to travel too far (pragmatic.) "Its do-able"

Finch - E4
Intellectual elitistic contempt (hiding deep feelings of inferiority) for the other guys, he's different. Has sex with Stifler's mother, wears clothes he seems to have lend from Bryan Ferry, has a facial expression that's the same as the one of Tony of the Time Team series as well as that of real life actor of the Mr Bean role, he's called 'refined' by Stifler, an E8 who publicly humiliates Finch at this sensitive spot, Finch is easily and deeply hurt.

Jim - E2-ish
Apart from the fact that he stays out of empathy reasons with an irritating serial talking E7 girl and says to the other guys; 'you're supposed to support me'; and his erotic focus, his tantrum (he does't really like the competitive thing the boys have about sex, thinks the emotional thing is more important) there are not much explicit indications to determine his probale E-type. However he reminds me of a person which I know is an E2.

E1's - singing teacher & Jim's mother
Jim's mother looks rather stern and unforgiving of errors, and the teacher is perfectionistic.

Sherman - E5 emulating E7-ish behavior
In todays extroverted society introversion is un-cool. Sherman tries to emulate a relationally succesful image ('Sherminator'), but unsuccesfull; trying to be someone else than his nerdy self works as a boomerang for him. The woman he misuses for his purposes seems to be an E4, initially liking his 'deep and long philosophical conversations'

Nadia - E9
When looking at Nadia it's easy to see why the ancient Chinese defined Yin (the ideal female character) in E9-ish traits; she's relaxed (which is a condition for good sex), she tries to give the partner what he wants. She's passive, accepting and 'narcotized' (which makes this character easy to mis-use by the more dominant styles.)

Kevin/Nova - E3
He's the most competitive of the boys; a good role player (some would call it 'liar'), strong goal focus, impatient and therefore looking for quick tricks to be succesful with Vicky (i.e. having sex with her and boasting about it with the other boys). Very funny is the emulation of E4-ish romantic behavior; which doesn't work at all with him; he can'd wait to get what he wants. His dominant brother which advises him is E8-ish.

Steve Stifler - E8
Blunt, insensitive, has sadistic pleasure in humiliating others in public. Calls others 'dickhead' and uses much more power language. His mother is an E8 too; she acts like the sister of John Wayne; 'You are dead' she says to Finch when they are going to have sex . Steve's younger brother a brash fun loving E7 boy.

Sarah - E9
Passive, amiable girl.

Jack/Oz - E7
Silver tongued charlatan, using his verbal abilities to get quick exciting sex eperiences, but he can help falling in love with E4 Heather. (mother nature is so clever to guarantee the reproduction of the human species)

Jessica - E2
Intrusively giving unasked advice to others, socially dominant and mingling into others problems and relations, helping the needy; but she doesn't forget herself; when Finch has love troubles she's bought a $50 booze flask for him and $150 earrings for herself: this is the E2 character!

Jim's Father - E5
Un-emotional analyzer; also dirty mind

Michelle - E7
She's directly looking for exciting experiences, but also (as with many E7's) this hides the fact that she's not so self-confident: 'Do your really wanna go with me?' In the pop enneagram literature as well as in Oldham's book the daring side of the E7 character is emphasised; but the sensation seekig E7's I know are often hiding insecurity behind quick verbal ability.

Singing choir - E6-ish
I don't exactly know why, but the E6's I know often like to participate in singing groups. E6 is a feeling based type and they feel secure in the group and singing together has a high degree of conformity to it. Of course also E4's like singing as self-expression but are not at all prone to participating in groups.

Heather - E4
She's a 'pure' E4 with heavy mood swings; a push/pull relation with Oz and semi-hateful comments which they like to direct at the things that make others happy. In a recent research report I read that the feelings of being amused by the suffering of others makes many people feel better; since happyness is a relative thing; when others are less happy; the extreme E4 is relatively more happy. So when you don't feel good; it's not so strange that you are inclined to make remarks that are hateful or painful for others….I have seen so many (extreme) E4's who just can't resist making hateful remarks; especially at the things that make other people happy. Perhaps the word jealousy is not so bad to use in these situations. Another motive for the E4's provocative comments can be disappointment when others give them too little attention (which often is the case since they need so much of it). Anyhow; Heather is only mildly E4 and mildly sadistic ('Don't you have to decapitate people with your Lacoiste stick?') and she's a sympathetic character.

Thats (not?) all about American Pie….

Cheers

Jan
