All good points, Cory.

When I first took Oldham's personality style test 9 yrs. ago my high scores were Solitary / Vigilant / Sensitive / Leisurely. I already knew I was Solitary, but knowledge of the other patterns, esp. the Vigilant was helpful. I think it's great that you're trying on all these styles and their characteristics. You'll have lots of time when you're *old* to be stuck in one category.

But I'm working the theoretical angle and stick to the "classical" idea of one type per person. That's actually different than the way DSM and Oldham do it. They will assign more than one style or disorder to a person. So, you're in good company.

Anyway, thanks for the good input. It's all going into the hopper.

Dave

: The description of compensatory narcissism sounded a lot like narcissism, but this clearly differentiates Inventive from Self-Confident. I have a question though; Are your type correlations fixed? I mean, other types besides 3w4s and ENTPs can be Inventives, the 3w4 ENTP is just the "basic" prototype? I'm not too sure about my enneagram type (probably 4), but I'm sure I would score very high for this style.

: :

  • Idealized self-image. Individuals of the Inventive type develop highly idealized images of themselves with which they identify and which they love. The person is his idealized self and seems to adore it (Glad, 494).

: I can deeply identify with this point. I also like to flaunt this idealized personality around.

    : :

  • Subdued demeanor. Persons of the Inventive type are energetic, but phlegmatic in temperament. "They can be quiet, rather private, subdued in demeanor, and have artistic interests and aesthetic sensibilities (Riso, 102)."

: Yes, sounds a lot like me. But, isn't this an introverted statement? I see the Inventive type as being primarily XNXP. I think it's the Extraverted iNtuition which gives the Inventive their unique personality.

    : :

  • Attention. Individuals of the Inventive type have a tendency to behave in such a way as to attract attention. "They can be subtle show-offs, but show-offs nonetheless (Riso, 103)."

: In certain places I can crave attention. For example, if I have a chance to show off my skills, like theatre in high school, I can give it style and flair. And even online, I tend to show off as well.

    : :

  • Openness to culture. The Inventive person has unusual thought processes, values intellectual matters, and judges in unconventional terms. He or she is aesthetically reactive and has a wide range of interests (McCrae and John).

: Yes, pretty much like me.

    : :

  • Intelligence. "Intelligence will typically be emphasized in their self-images and social dealings." They put great stock in their ideas and demand that others do likewise (Riso, 103).

: You know me all to well! Intelligence is one of the major self-image idealizations...although I might say creativity and imagination are the most prized. Intelligence and insight next.

    : :

  • Competence. The faith of those of the Inventive type is "in their ability to improvise something, and they display an unusual talent for rising to the expediency of a situation (Keirsey, 184)." Their focus is on competent excellence in performance.

: This sounds like the reacting-to-the-present SPs.

    : :

  • Innovation. The Inventive type maintains an independent view and is "the most reluctant of all the types to do things in a particular manner just because that is the way things always have been done (Keirsey, 183)." They are inventors and innovators.

    : Somewhat like me.

    : :

  • Cleverness. They are mentally bright and quick-witted. For those of the Inventive type "to be taken in, to be manipulated by another, is humiliating; this offends their joy in being masters of the art of oneupmanship (Keirsey, 185)."

    : Again, somewhat like me.

    : :

  • Status. They are highly competitive in pursuit of success and prestige. They want very much to be outstanding in some way (Riso, 103), to gain recognition, even fame and glory.

: Very much like me. What value do I have if I am plain and normal?

    : :

  • Self-consciousness Persons of the Inventive type look to others for approval (Reich, 47). They are very conscious of how others treat them (Riso, 103) and highly sensitive to criticism (Oldham, 89) and negative evaluation.

: This is extremely like me. I wonder, perhaps I am not of the Sensitive style after all, since both styles can be self-conscious? Anyways, it's a great description, I can see myself in it.

    : Congratulations!

    : -Cory
