I would say the general fear and anxiety in their personalities makes them phobic E6. They move towards structure, conformity, and routine for the same reason as E6s. I know a Counterphobic E6 at work who has social phobia, I don't think he's a Sensitive/Avoidant but he has many similarities.

In the case of E4, they become self-conscious because they want to protect their self-image. They may see themselves as inferior to others and withdraw. This is a different motivation than the Sensitive who is afraid of the environment.

: Sensitive personality type / DSMIV Avoidant
: Dr. John M. Oldham has defined the Sensitive personality style. The following six characteristic traits and behaviors are listed in his The New Personality Self-Portrait.

: Familiarity. Individuals with the Sensitive personality style prefer the known to the unknown. They are comfortable with, even inspired by, habit, repetition, and routine.

: Concern. Sensitive individuals care deeply about what other people think of them.

: Circumspection. They behave with deliberate discretion in their dealings with others. They do not make hasty judgments or jump in before they know what is appropriate.

: Polite reserve. Socially they take care to maintain a courteous, self-restrained demeanor.

: Role. They function best in scripted settings, vocationally and socially: when they know precisely what is expected of them, how they are supposed to relate to others, and what they are expected to say.

: Privacy. Sensitive men and women are not quick to share their innermost thoughts and feelings with others, even those they know well.

: +++ Jan's analysis
: I think it could be described as E9(-4) subtype; especially the sticking to the familiar and the conservativeness; they want to keep dis-harmonizing new things away from themselves. I think they are too nice and social for friends and family to be labelled as E5. Oldham says they need routine and procedure because of their own lack of direction; that must be E9; doesn't it?

: Jan
