: : In defense of the Big Brother program...

: : Personally, I don't find it any better or worse than the Survivor show. I found the Survivor show to be incredibly annoying at times, and felt it was far too over-produced with the music, and the editing, and so forth. I found it way too much like the MTV-versions of so-called "reality" programming, with the people on the show often shown talking to the camera as if it was... I don't know.. what's the deal there?

: --A mini-interview? I like those sometimes. You get to see what they are thinking. Survivor's editing seemed ok to me, but yes, some of the stuff was over-the-top and cheesy ("conch shell of truth", anyone?)

Well I was just trying to dispel the mis-conception that Big Brother and Survivor are comparable programs (in terms of production). Survivor was just another version of "Road Rules" (MTV), except more interesting because the people had to be conniving to win the money. But also realize that the "tribal council" scenes were edited so to make the vote seem as close as possible, unless it was a blowout. The clips shown of the people going to vote were never in the same order in which they actually voted. My point is that is was possible to edit Survivor to make it much more interesting than it actually was.

: : Which is why I balk at calling it a "reality show." Big Brother I think is much more pure in the sense of trying to convey reality. This is, of course, why it has not been as popular.. REAL LIFE IS BORING AS HELL. Most of the time, reality does NOT provide for entertaining television. That's why they put those guys out on and island and made then eat bugs and rats. Because it's NOT real. It's almost cartoonish, the stuff they did..

: --I wouldn't call Survivor a reality show OR a game show... it's an amalgam of both. BB is perhaps more reality-based, but of course when you sequester a bunch of people in an ugly house with no phone, tv, or outside contact, boredom is sure to follow.

Yes. I really think that the problem lies in the people in the Big Brother house themselves. They banded together incredibly well, and I personally applaud them for that. However, it's got CBS and the views tearing out their hair because they all became so close that they dared not disturb the peace and the house just took an incredibly "9" attitude.

: : Which is why I, unlike most other people, can tolerate and at times even enjoy Big Brother. I am a huge fan of observing other people and their behaviors. I don't mind that. Most of the viewing public can't tolerate a bunch of people just lounging around talking, but that's just me.

: --Hehe. I admit I enjoy it at times, too.. I just think conflict is more interesting to watch. These are real people doing what they have to do, but a little drama wouldn't hurt 'em.

Well, it wouldn't hurt US, the viewing public. :-) But I, as a casual obsever who wasn't really looking to be "entertained", am very proud of them for being so boring. For being just like us...

: : As far as the voting out of the exciting people is concerned... Recognize that the people who think the show is boring are not going to pay 95 cents to vote out a boring person. You have to hate someone in order to make the call, and people who are outspoken or recognizable are more likely to be noticed, and therefore, rub people the wrong way. Also, I think the viewership of the show, at least those who watch it and care a lot about it, are a sect of the population who wanted the group to all get along, without conflict. This is a sect of viewers who watched the first two "troublemakers" and voted them out. They saw the group become closer-knit after that and enjoyed it. I think the voters in general just watched the show and wanted to watch a big happy family. And that is what they got, at the expense of excitement and "interesting" television suited for someone who wanted another "Survivor" but didn't get it.

: --Someone speculated that if the calling procedure were switched around, the boring people would be voted out first. Because when you focus on the positive (voting for one person to stay in, not be banished), then the fans would come out for that person. I thought Curtis would win, but since they are changing the voting for Friday (voting for who should be first, second, and third), I think he and Josh, the ones most laying low, will be second and third. Eddie seems to have the support behind him to win.

Yes, I do beleive Eddie will win as well. He has, in my eyes, come across very well in the past week. He's been the only one who's really shown a desire to win, a passion that I think is necessary to get the positive vote. I'd actually be very suprised if he did not pull off the win. For a while I thought he was doing himself in, when he was going against the group in saying "I'm here for the money" and backing out of the deal to walk out. I thought that would have been the end of him, but since that, the focus has been more on getting to the end, rather than being a happy family.
