: My reasons? Abbott seemed to be a "con man" type to me, but his main concern appeared to me to be social acceptance. Also he used Lou as a foil to look good compared to a misfit. Poor Lou Costello wanted so much to be loved and appreciated. Would give you the shirt off his back. Always thought he was playing a slightly "retarded" character on the TV shows{this is what I am referring to in my analysis}. I read him as a 4, because of his unrequited love for Miss Brook, and his shyness in expressing it. Think that a 2 would have been bolder about it. > Hilary Brook seemed to be an ideal and hopeless dream for the limited Costello. She symbolized the qualities seemingly out of reach such as education, grace, physical conditioning, and of course high intelligence. Yet on sensitivity, she and Lou were a good match. I read her as 1,mainly because of the way she carried herself, remote and austere and of high standards while friendly and caring. >
