Jan's Movie Reviews - Angels of the Universe (2000)

Icelandic writer Einar Már Guđmundsson wrote the novel "Englar Alheimsins" about his brother and his madness. This film by Friđrik Ţór, director of Children of Nature, is powerful. It has great music by Sigurrós and good acting. It shows how sad insanity as a disease can be. There are many good jokes but the humor is dark. If that is not a problem then you should see this film. Note though this is not a comedy but a drama.

+++ Jan's analysis

Paul is an interesting, funny guy. He tells his family weird stories when they are eating together, he's sweet towards his parents, is a creative painter and drums a bit on his set of drums. Until a personal crisis comes when his girlfriend leaves him. Right from that moment he starts pacing up and down in his room, he keeps laying in bed for too long, and he hits the drums too hard. He starts smoking and drinking, fights with his parents who try to help him adn starts hallicunating. God tells him that he has to build an ark on his room and wrinkled monsters try to kill him (compare: with the movie A Nightmare on Elmstreet); as he says 'I was goo-goo, ga-ga, ding-dong, bing-bong'. He ends up in a mental asylum and gets diagnosed as schizophrenic.

Classification: Idiosyncratic Style of character.
