He has little self confidence, is nervous, but wants to prove the opposite in sports matches: 'A man's got to do what a man's got to do' : : Classification: Devoted Style of character : : : : - Sanca Coffee : : Same archetype as Derice (they are brothers), but only more extreme; his fears are channeled into acting the animated clown (Woody Allen style.) He hides his Calimero-syndrome behind a comical communicative smokescreen. Comical contrast between verbal 'courage' and underlying fear and helplessness. Kisses an egg he takes with him out of superstition. : : Classification: Devoted Style : : : : - Mr. Coolidge : : Easygoing man, wants to prevent his son junior causing problems to him, to preserve his mental harmony. Looks a bit passive, without energy. : : Classification: Leisurely Style : : : : - Irving Blitzer : : Suffers from hidden feelings of inferiority; which caused him to become over-ambitious. Even after many gold medals he needed to prove himself (to himself?) and illegally made his bob sledge more heavy so that he would win. Tragically; he won but had to give the medal back when his deception was discovered. Now he's the 'paradise lost' disappointed and fat ex-sportsman; easily disillusioned and angry when things don't go as he wants in life. He initially (and realistically) pours cold water over the boys plans by poining to the flaws in it. Notice him stressing the need to develop staying power,d iscipline and to keep going on with the difficult training; plodding on against the odds. : : Classification: Serious Style : : : : - Yul ('Baldie') : : Agressive male macho. 'You! I'll kill you!' Intimidating. Loves arm-wrestling. Despises weakness. : : Classification: Agressive Style : : : : - Derice's wife : : 'Shut up!'. Loud Adventurous Style woman. : : : : - Junior Bevil : : Wants to help his friends with something which doesn't cost him much energy; selling his fathers car and then leaving the country to avoid direct confrontation with his father. Also he wants to win the running game with energy saving trick. Besides his agressive traits we see a mainly teddybearish boy who wants to put his mothers name on the sledge. : : : : - Irv & Kurt : : Two narcissistic ex-collegues of Irving, who love to defame him and the Jamaican team. Irv clearly shows concern for image and narcissitic revenge based on image damage done to him by Irving in the past. : : : : - Roger : : A bit shy and introverted, but also objective, alert and helpful/warm toward people familiar to him. : : Classification: Sensitive Style : : - Joseph Grool : : Narcissistic defamer of the new competitor for public atttention; the Jamaican team. : : : : - The mother of Sanca and Bernice : : Brash, loud, looks like Adventurous Style woman (this style can be found dominant in the Netherlands Antilles islands.) : : - name?? : : There is a male racist, a paranoid agressor with the bobsledge sportsman, who starts a fight in the restaurant. : : Classification: Vigilant Style. : : : : Comments anyone? : : Jan : : this is totally wrong. sanka and derice are not brothers and the mother is sanka's mother. the male racist is joseph grool who is on the east germany team and is very confident in winning. junior is not mr. coolidge's son but the son of one of the most wealthiest men on the island, mr. bevil. cool runnings is a great movie, i'd hate for it to be mislead. : : : : -
