While I'm pretty sure that the American "Big Bird" was (is?) voiced by a woman, but my initial thought is that it was referred to as "he." I watched that show a lot when I was a little kid and I don't distinctly remember hearing them use the pronoun "she" or "her" in reference to "Big Bird."

Though I think they might have found it VERY hard, it's possible that they intentionally made the character gender neutral in as many ways as possible, going to far to never really give the bird a gender. Most if not all of the other "muppets" on the program were either male or female, but the Big Bird was either completely neutral, or protrayed as a very child-like and/or somewhat effeminate male.

: : It's been some time since I've seen the yellow bird, in my memory he's female but this could be the cultural bias which says that males should be tought and females cute and nice. Dependent males sometimes are mistakenly thought to be gay because of their 'soft' character style.

: i believe that she is often mistaken for male, but Ive been told more than once that she is a female. thats not saying how reliable my source was.
