Jan's movie reviews - Heavy Weights (1994)

Case text citation:

Jerry, an overweight pre-teen, is sent to a "fat farm" for the summer, lured by the promise of go-karts and swimming fun. When he arrives, however, he finds that the camp has been bought out by an exercise/fitness guru whose mental stability quickly deteriorates. Jerry and his friends--including a counselor whose been there 18 years--finally make a stand.

+++ Jan's analysis

- Gerry
Gerry doesn't want to loose the 'baby fat' which is all over his body. Thereby he implicity says he wants to keep the relative helplessness associated with this physical handicap (slowness). He's a passive but social boy.
Classification: Devoted Style

- Tony Perkis
Psychopathic narcissist; I guess this movie character is very akin to the character of cult leader annex wannabee rock star David Koresh (Waco.) Tony uses his enormous energy and verbal /physical power and - to some extend - charisma as well as inimidation, humiliation and punishment to establish dominance over the group of fat boys. He's manipulative and wants to make money by his fitness program. He's a fanatic, believes too much in his own idea's and thinks the world turns around him (or must turn around him), he's impatient and easily angered. Over-ambitious, competitive, fanatic and risk taking. He wants his followers to 'Perkinize' by his own system (compare: the people living around Wako said about the dependent people living on the Mount Carmel estate in Texas that they were 'Koreshians'. ) He's calculating and cunning, easily can mislead people and make them work for his purposes (compare: Koresh brainwashed 'his' people, which he manipulated to work hard, eat and sleep little and give him their salary so that he could have good dinners and music instruments for himself and buy guns) Like Koresh Perkins has a 'dymanic' belief system and is unfeeling or even sadistic with regard to people who don't live according to his idea's. ('Tony Perkins' is a caricature of motivational speaker Tony Robbins?)
Classification: Adventurous Style

- Pat
He's shy and avoidant when he meets Julie.
Classification: Sensitive Style

- Julie
Same as Pat; she's empathic but doesn't dare to speak out.
Classification: Sensitive Style

- Josh
Humorous, making people pay attention to him by his 'dramatic' helping behavior.
Classification: Dramatic Style (with Self Sacrificing traits)

- Lars
Lars is sadistic but also a coward, orders the children around like a drill officer in the army. He savours their suffering and is overtly loyal to the provider of his power position: Tony.
Classification: Agressive Style

- Harvey
Looks like a Devoted Style person; crying like a child. His wife could be Self Sacrificing Style.

- Tim
Tim is stubbornly contrary to Tony's authority, rebellious/negativistic attitude, sabotages Tony's plan in the dance club.
Classification: Leisurely/negativistic style

- Roy
The passive fat black boy; same character type as Gerry: Devoted Style.
