Jan's Movie Reviews - Tomb Raider (2001) aka 'Lara Croft'

Case text citation:

Disowned by her family, she has spent the last eight years travelling the globe exploring the tombs, temples and archaeological sites of ancient civilisations - funding her travels by writing her exploits and occassionally picking up certain 'items' of historical importance which certain people will pay a LOT of money for. One such person is a man named Powell whose after 'The Clock of Ages', a device which gives its user the powers of the tribe it once belonged

+++ Jan's analysis:

There is not really that much depth to be found in the characters, but let's give it a try:

- Lara Croft
She's tough and strong, the archetypical brave action hero; modelled on the Indiana Jones and James Bond chararcter.
Classification: definitely Adventurous Style.

- Lara's 'inventor' assistent Bryce
He's absorbed in his work and gets easily irritated when Lara interferes with his techno projects, a low profile grumpy. Messy nerdy techocratic guy
Classification: Leisurely Style with Idiosyncratic traits

- Butler Hillary
Interesting character. Hillary’s the disciplinarian, the sort of calm leader, if you like - or he thinks he is. He’s, he’s quite a cool guy, really. He’s quite long-suffering in terms of what Bryce, Lara and the droids are sort of doing to Croft Manor. Because he wants to keep that ship-shape; he wants to sort of keep it in good order. He loves Lara. He wants to protect her all the time. I think he probably knew Lord Croft [played by Jolie's real-life father, John Voight] pretty well, and sympathises with Lara and her reminiscences of her dad and everything. But underneath it all is a simmering eagerness to be all part of it. Then when [it] comes to handling the pump-action shotgun, we see another side of Hillary.

Conscientious Style with Serious Style makes the best fit (copied from the butler in the Batman movies?)

- Alex
Her unreliable 'friend'. Alex is a fellow tomb raider and Lara's occasional accomplice. He's a great supporting character, a guy who wishes he was 1/10th as resourceful and skilled as Lara is, who frequently finds himself five steps behind her in the field.

Classification: Vigilant Style (introverted criminal)

- Manfred Powell:

The egocentric arch villain in the film, Powell, adversary of Lara Croft's father, Lord Croft, and now Lara's sworn enemy. Unreliable silver tongued criminal. I guess the person acting this role is a Dramatic Style real life character.

Classification: anti social personality /adventurous style, what else?

- Lara's father Lord Croft
I would say Serious Style could be his typecast. Plodding on to save the world, melancholic.

- Pimms (assistant to Powell)
Looks a bit like a Idiosyncratic Style 'weirdo'.
