: : Gandalf: a reflection of Tolkien’s psyche?
: : Tolkien’s character Gandalf is an idiosyncratic wizard, alarming in his abrupt transitions between geniality and crankiness. Gandalf seems to match Oldham’s Idiosyncratic Style of character (same as Claudio Naranjos enneatype E5 (subtype) , Millon’s schizotypical personality, and MBTI’s INTJ type). I wonder; could Gandalf reflect’s Tolkien’s own character in some way? Tolkien’s world, the people living there, their names and talk styles are rather ‘different’ and a bit detached, even when compared with Harry Potter’s fantasy world. Tolkien seems to be a ‘thinker’ (rationalist); his fictional worlds don’t offer such things like romantic love or sensitive, lovely, understanding (‘feeling’ in mbti) women.

Do you mean detached in the sense that they are all in their own little areas of earth and speak different languages? The areas are very well organized and detailed in layout. Compartmentalized in other words. But that may be a typical thing to do when creating a mythology...to follow a certain order of beings that exist apart from one another but have common interminglings so as to explain the unknown. However, the fact that the fantasy and the structure exist hand in hand in Tolkien's work does, to me, suggest an N and J bent.
The characters and their relationships are very task oriented to move plot along. The areas and different groups seem to become more cohesive when united in the effort to save all of the lands for the greater good.
I have read that Tolkien was an INTJ along with CS Lewis, his good friend. He was very much centered on the conflict of good and evil/ and the resolution. I can see how Gandalf's character could reflect some of Tolkien's personality. After all he was a wizard of words.
Tolkien's love of languages and being able to deeply develop and apply them was very prolific and extensive. He loved the mechanics of it.......
