Dionysus

‘The god of the most blessed ecstacy and the most enraptured love’, of wild spontaneous – childlike, dreamer-like - behavior. (imagine Robin Williams in the movies) D’s realm is that of the emotional and irrational, of manic intoxication, of an ecstatic state. ‘In between, it is the archetype …who experience ecstatic moments and intensely contradictory impulses’. D. is an intense and emotional person, who becomes absorbed in whatever is his/her current passion, forgetting the obligations, assignments or appointments that he may have made. Consequently he cannot seem to commit himself to working steadily towards achieving long-term goals (unpredictable). He can be very moody, one moment he may be in profound despair, the next, ecstatically transported to a new high by somone or something. He is drawn to whatever intensifies experience for him: drugs…music…the ecstacy of lovemaking.; everything that makes him/her feel the emptyness inside (automutilative behavior?!). ‘Of all the masculine archetypes, Dionysus is the archetype of intense opposites…can rapidly cross the borderline between these opposites. Major emotional shifts are precipitated by minimal events…he may fluctuate between a passionate lover and a cold stranger…tears you into pieces….the dualistic aspects of D…tendency for extreme and intense feelings….’
