Tony is a sympathetic fellow, idealistic but also easily stressed and angered or feeling guilty. He tends to see the tragic side in history; apparently projecting his own dysphoric moodyness on the objects they find; his hypothesis about what could have been the pre-historic scene is often a 'doom and gloom' biased scenario.
