I need to prove myself to others, for fear of being ridiculed. The most effective way of preventing ridicule is showing that I catch the mistakes that the other person does not, and hence must be more skilled at whatever the mistakes are being made in than the other person. It's a silent cry for respect (and please don't make any wiseass comments about exactly how silent it is).
