Hi Rich, Jan
I suppose it's sometimes hard enough to type characters in movies because of poor character development and such; Charles presents additional difficulties.
But, he just couldn't be a Nine. Nines do sometimes keep a busy schedule but they still manage to adopt a laid back appearance. Charles was hyper and frenetic with quick body movements and a witty agile mind. Nines are often very smart but they generally aren't real quick like that.
Charles' drinking and party going seemed much more like a Seven's attempt to distract himself than a Nine's narcotization.
No doubt, people would say about him that he didn't live up to expectations, but this is much more often said about Sevens than Nines. Nines attempt to preempt that sort of thing by keeping other people's expectations low. People tend to discount Nines. Sevens are often so bright that people are disappointed when they don't see a follow through.
He's a Seven, primarily mecurial.
And, if you really want to take enneagram theory seriously and run with it (which you guys might not) you could recognize that Fives deteriorate to Seven in an attempt to prevent personality disintegration. Nash could have projected that energy outwards in the form of an alter ego - everything that he wasn't - the lighthearted, fun loving Charles.
: : : Charles seems like a classic Seven to me.

: : +++ thanks for your feedback; yes I thought about this possibility too; he jumped on the table but otherwise seems to be passively hanging around.... would you say Mercurial Style or Dramatic Style would make the best fit?

: Hello Jan:
: I think that you were right the first time. The Leisurely/9W8 CAN be active physically! The ISTJ/9W8 that I worked with and have mentioned from time to time, belonges to a dance club and spends several nights a week dancing with his wife. In fact, he met his wife at a dancing contest! ( He is 8 months younger than me; 1942 was a good year )I don't see any reason why a solid Leisurely/9W8 couldn't have a touch of drama, and still a normal person of their type....

: In fact, Jan, Charles seems to be a good fit for your " encyclopedic knowledge type. " He probably loves the research part of being a professor, but is years behind in publishing anything. Charles is different in only that he is much smarter, and has gotten to a much better job, than the average member of this type ( who would be an expert in something non useful like horror comics.... ) His peers would most likely say of him that he never fulfilled his promise! Rich
