I think your comments about the quickness of Charles behaviour are pertinent. Also, cCopied from my post a month ago here, these were my impressions of Charles.
"Charles,(the imaginary friend), a type 7w6. Is friendly and interested in John and is unconcerned about being associated with the nerd image of John. Tells him that too much work is boring and that beer is the answer. Reminds him to eat and brings him out of his reveries. Is spontaneous, loyal, extraverted and fun loving. Demonstrates empathy with John's disappointments when he throws his desk out of the 3rd story window and laughs afterwards. I wonder if this could represent the disintegrated side of John's 5's character (5 going to 7)as Charles often appears when he is feeling upset."
I too think the 5 may have been part of John's disintegrated personality which has split off under stress. I wonder whether in real life schizophrenics that this may be the case. I agree with the assessments of John (5) and Martin (3). I find it difficult to see Alice as an 8 but I could not discern enough characteristics in the movie to feel confident giving her any type.
