Has anyone read about or actually read Jedediah Purdy's works? He mentions the cynical attitudes people have in society (that is, that certain something which goes by many names--nihilism, irony, postmodernism) and how destructive that attitude is.

Surprisingly, a lot of the posts on bulletin boards such as this and others seem to be of this type. This is strange because a lot of people come here because they have been disaffected by their world. Yet their behavior is characteristic of the kind of society which has caused them so much damage in the first place, isn't it? I mean, why would people so hurt by something then choose to adopt its principles in toto?

Sometimes people on bulletin boards ask why life has to be so bitter, but then they offer no examples of how they have worked to improve things in our country. Others act nihilistic and cynical on bulletin boards, but then, if you ask them, they suffer themselves from the very same problems that are generated by the nihilistic and cynical attitude of society in the first place.

Does anybody else know what I mean?
