: For example, recently I told her that John and I (I don't know if you've been following this lil' drama, but I met a guy online, John, and we've been talking since late december, and decided to meet in July) are going to be meeting, and she got very bent out of shape, saying that people on the internet are all child molesters and some other such garbage. For a little while that bothered me, but I just stopped caring after a while. I stopped being so worried about what she thought of me, and realized that I'm old enough to do what I know is right and not have her comments bothering me so much. It's hard to do, and I have to consciously tell myself that her comments don't need to affect me so much, but it's starting to work. =o) : -Emily, attempting to grow up ************************************************************************* :-) I believe this (dealing with your mom's reaction) will get even easier with time and practice. My mom had much the same reaction to my meeting people via the internet. She has heard so much about all the creeps. I reminded her that a very small portion of the general populus is sociopathic :-) and that it would be very difficult to keep up a consistent act over much time and many many pages of text exploring myriad topics. It also helped that she knows someone (an attorney friend of my step-brother) who met his wife on-line (they are happy and expecting their first child now, btw :-) And while I also wouldn't have changed my actions because of my mom's discomfort, I do prefer that there be more agreement; so I'm glad she's more comfortable with the idea now. It's probably strange for our moms because this is a fairly new way of meeting people. They would probably both breathe a little easier with daughters a little...more conservative? Ah, well...
