:-) I believe this (dealing with your mom's reaction) will get even easier with time and practice.
My mom had much the same reaction to my meeting people via the internet. She has heard so much about all the creeps. I reminded her that a very small portion of the general populus is sociopathic :-) and that it would be very difficult to keep up a consistent act over much time and many many pages of text exploring myriad topics. It also helped that she knows someone (an attorney friend of my step-brother) who met his wife on-line (they are happy and expecting their first child now, btw :-) And while I also wouldn't have changed my actions because of my mom's discomfort, I do prefer that there be more agreement; so I'm glad she's more comfortable with the idea now.
It's probably strange for our moms because this is a fairly new way of meeting people. They would probably both breathe a little easier with daughters a little...more conservative? Ah, well...
