Perhaps religion would help him out. We're all Catholics who don't attend mass now that we don't live at home. Of course there's no way I could manipulate him into church-going, especially since I don't believe, let alone attend anymore.

I'm pretty sure he'll deny there is a problem, though his behaviour suggests otherwise.
I've never confronted him about his problems, at least not in a deep way. We aren't lifelong friends & I don't see him all that often.
Even if we did buy him the 4-track system, he may be too depressed to use it. It may just lie there, tormenting him.
