I found the same with my grandmother. But being solicitous in terms of making cups of tea etc and occasionally putting a hand on the shoulder can convey a lot. Also saying, 'Hi nan' (or whatever) cheerfully when you come into the room.

If she likes gambling, does she like playing cards? Get her to show you some card games and play cards with her. I'm not sure how bad her mental health is, but she might also like talking over old memories of what things were like for her when she was younger.
