Your first guess would probably be right. In situation 1, I would probably have turned down the ride: "No, but thanks." I love walking, and riding with strangers, especially of that age group, can be trying. In the second situation, I probably just wouldn't say anything. I would assume that the young man was getting it for his kid sister or something.

Hint: I believe that our particular defenses express themselves more clearly when we're in difficult and unusual situations than when we're in everyday rote situations in which we're all comfortably enculturated into doing pretty much the same thing.
