I would say that I have only had a few lucid dreams. Usually when I was bored out of my mind and really tired. It would occur while in the midst of a loooooong boooooring pedantic lecture. Like one time I was trying to listen to a talk on....hmmm....it was so boring I have blocked it from my mind. Anyway as I was trying to listen I suddenly started thinking or dreaming about being on a train but it was not a real train it was like a cartoon kind of train. Like the "Little Engine That Could" train. It was really weird and when I realized the absurdity of what I was thinking...I had to ask myself why was I thinking that? That was loopy! Honestly, I have never done drugs and I don't even drink so it had to be a lucid kind of thing. Sometimes now it happens to me in the morning before I completely wake up and I am at the very far end of REM. I will know that I need to get up but I will still be thinking some really groovy thoughts.

In a college psychology class I remember learning that sleep deprivation can lead to hallucinations. It is sort of like if you don't dream everyday (whether you remember it or not) then your mind can't handle it and your need to dream sort of spills over into your waking life. Dreams are supposed to serve as some kind of outlet for the brain. It's good to know that you need to dream, lucid or not, for health.
