As you exit your workplace at 5:00, a friend comes running up to you with a grin saying, "I hear you are bringing salmon tomorrow." Puzzled, you say, "What?" Your friend says, "Ms. X says told us you are making salmon cakes for the barbecue tomorrow. What up with that?" Then you remember. A couple of days ago, you had come in a sleep-deprived haze (up much of the night working on a project). Your tough, all-business, supervisor (who normally commands your attention) was also lost in the fog when she asked whether you wanted to bring cups, plates, sodas, or chips to the annual department picnic. For some unknown reason, you suddenly had a craving for fish, blurted out "salmon cakes," and rushed off to a meeting. Now in retrospect, you can see the bewildered look that had been on your supervisor's face. It hits you that you are not that good of a cook and this is not some kind of potluck. It is a picnic in the park with the meat catered.
