I'm very moved by your post. There were lots of ones in my family, too
(although quite a lot of physical abuse as well), and I heard many of the same things you
did. No way to "get it right," because something fundamentally seemed
to be lacking. "Why can't you be like ______?" I find the critical nature
of one very difficult to stay away from at home and at work. Not replaying
