I'm always content (there's that word again, eh, Ev? "content!") to sit in silence in the company of people I don't know that well. I've gone to the same barber for about 10 years, so I kind of know him, but I still prefer silence to when we try to have conversations about where I'm going to school or bowling or golf or whatever. But, again, I think that's more due to the fact that I'm more comfortable keeping my mouth shut if I'm not truly interested in the conversation. I usually can't stand that kind of "small talk".... : : : : I was just wondering if any of you found getting haircuts/hair-dos to be an uncomfortable situation. I always feel like I'm obligated to make small talk with this person I don't even know. I would be perfectly content to just sit there in silence while the barber works. Do you strike up a conversation with he hairdresser, only respond to what they bring up, or sit in silence? Just curious to know how you all feel. Same goes for me about the smalltalk. I used to just sit quietly and only talk if the barber asked me something. But I was always uncomfortable doing that, and I did feel as though I "should" make conversation. The irony is that if you allow yourself to not say anything, it becomes easier and more comfortable to talk. In any case, though, I hate smalltalk and normally have very little meaningful to say to the barber, so it's normally pretty quiet. - Hal -
