: I guess Australia is a little like the Brits that Ronnie mentioned. It's quite common for friends to refer to each other as "darl" or whatever. Down here, there is a comedy show called "Fast Forward" that includes as sketch that has the main character calling every one "pet". There's nothing even remotely romantic about it....it's not supposed to be interpreted that way. It's a bit like saying "mate" without the 'blokey' ring to it.

: Now, you take someone like me who is so bad with remembering names that I have to be reminded of my own name each morning! It's gotten so bad that, when I meet someone for the first time, I ask them to repeat their name to make sure I've got it right, then tell them that I'm notorious for forgetting names - and for that reason I call every one "pet" - it's really nothing personal....

: I use these kind of endearments frequently. I vary the things I say however (repetition does get very tired) - and sometimes get carried away when I'm in a particularly dazzling creative mood. For example: it was my friends birthday the other day - and when I wished him a Happy Birthday - I told him that he was "....the bee's knees - the wasp's nipples. He was, I would go so far as to say, the entire set or erogenous zones of every major flying-insect species in the Western hemisphere...." See what I mean? I get plain carried away with myself! So I'm actually going light on you lot when I say things about dingoes kidneys and the like....

: I've been very misunderstood - particularly on the net. My first nickname was Pet - and I got no end of requests for cyber-sex. I used to send them packing by replying that I was a Christian - and that if they wished to discuss the Bible, I'd be more than happy to oblige - and then sign off reminding them that Jesus loves them. For some strange reason, they never take me up on it and I never hear from them again. O well. So I changed it to "Grace Note" (which is actually a singing term - but it has spiritual overtones).

: In my fathers family (a large Irish clan of 13 kids - and no, they weren't Catholic!) it was chock-a-block full of extroverts with great senses of humour. Everyone was given a nickname. It was a sign of acceptance. My own name is Amanda and have always been called Mandy by at least half the people I know....but my own immediate family have called me Milly for years.

: Anyway....enough drivel....

: Amanda :)

As you can see by the sign on above I've been called various and sundry names by friends and foes alike. But in all my years of wandering far and wide upon this mud ball called Earth, I've never had the high honor of having someone refer to me as insect genitalia. What a sham of a life I've been living! :( BTW, I'm officially 44 today. :)
