Therapists have difficulty diagnosing and have to probe defenses to attempt
an assessment. Generally, imperfect mirroring triggers the defense. Narcissists get angry. attack and leave. Borderlines get angry, distance,
but cling (push/pull.) Simply put: Narcisists require interpretation;
Borderlines respond to confrontation. The Narcissists know it is not their
fault (grandiosity.) The Borderlines are acutely anxious that "it" is their fault (defective.)
Most 8s and 4s do not have personality disorders, but in the extreme
charactecture, one can see tendencies "normals" manifest.
So, 8 and 4 are polar extremes of type, but share concerns that manifest
differently. Both consider themselves, sensitive, vulnerable, special,
misunderstood. One denies, the other dramatizes. Both can be confusing to
interact with. Riso and Hudson, Palmer both try to compare and contrast
8 and 4 in their works. MBTI can provide clues also. (Ni or Si.)
The tests help narrow the choices and provide a basis for exploration.
They are inexact.
