I had a wonderful crowd of friends at University. There are bound to be others who are not into the Frat scene. When I went to college, I didn't hang around in the bars. We had a very diverse Chaplaincy where people of all sorts of beliefs hung out, the more serious minded types - but we had some good parties too. i had a maths problem too. It took me a lot of basic ground work to get to grips with High School maths. But when I could do it I liked it. Also a great sense of achievement and a feeling it had sharpened my mind. It was a real psychological breakthrough as it had always been a phobia since infants school. Now I want to do the Higher Level maths one day. You have to see it as being about relationships. The universe itself is made up of mathematical relationships. It IS something real. I had to get mine to go to teacher-training college, but it was worth it and made me feel more confidant about numbers. I don't like cold academia, but there are also some wonderful passionate people who have been academic. Some great eccentrics too. If you feel intimidated by it, get to grips with the system now. Like how to do referencing correctly, so it becomes an easy habit. Like learning how to use books and journals and the Web for research. There are so many exciting things to learn about. Wouldn't you enjoy seminars where you sit around discussing philosophy. Get some external input from writers and get thinking. It always lifts MY depression. Or read a brilliant novel. Hope you can get out of the slough of despond, Best wishes, Tiggy.
