You are right I think it was the "stand up for themselves" part that was throwing me off.

You're talking about one of those situations where a guy will be trying to be nice and the girl will take it the wrong way and just play along to see how stupid she can make him look. And then laugh at him either in his face or behind his back. Unfortunately, while I was single I was on the receiving end of it a few times from guys who laughed at me that way.
I agree this is nasty behavior. It's too bad more people can't be nice....
I always tried to be as nice as possible. I would think most fours would be empathetic in this way.
