Enneagram Type 4 Board Archive sympathy and empathy - exactly! but some people will not be swayed from their precious misery.Posted by Derf on May 15, 1998 at 19:32:43: In Reply to: sympathy and empathy posted by Devora-Leah on May 15, 1998 at 17:41:55: Right on the point! In my subject-heading flame, I guess I'm talking about depressive people who don't want to get out of it - they refuse to take any constructive action. Oh, their precious suffering! I'm sympathetic as hell, sure - but sometimes the disgust also gets to me. A morbid disgust. When I was depressed, I always at least thought about changes I could make, and eventually, I summoned up enough guts to make those changes! I'm sure my argument was one-sided (referring only to a limited range of depressive people), but I *swear*, some people like their suffering. Sympathy for THAT devil is what makes me cringe. Call me cold-hearted, but I think it looks useless, futile (and not even comforting to the depressed party even). Even GOD "only scratches those who scratch themselves." ;>
