Enneagram Type 4 Board Archive Re: Does it seem like more girls are 4's than guys?Posted by FRED on October 29, 2001 at 20:42:58: In Reply to: Re: Does it seem like more girls are 4's than guys? posted by pork on October 27, 2001 at 13:13:59: : : Where are all the male 4s? : What are your criteria for identifying someone as a Four? Before we continue, let's remember that among the dozen or so well-known Enneagram authors, the definition of the type varies - occasionally on the basics, and especially on the finer points. The scores of lesser-known Enneagram authors are even more divergent from each other, often appearing idiosyncratic to the mainstream reader. : : To those of you who know who posts here: subtract off the 5 posters and you the residue of other types and what do you have -- a male or female dominated group? : Over the lifespan of this forum (and based on the occasionally inexperienced and unreliable self-typing of the posters, but we can't afford to grapple with that problem - in this environment, we have to take people at their word), they have been roughly equal. Maybe a few more females than males, but that figure seems statistically insignificant. Not that this forum would be a reliable population sample anyway. For instance, ninety percent of the Fours here are INFP. In the real world, I find more frequency of other M-B types among Fours, but ISFP Fours etc. don't seem to frequent these kinds of internet forums as much. (Bang goes the argument that this forum may indicate that Fours are predominantly INFP.) From those data, you cannot even infer that INFP Fours are predominantly female. Those are just the INFP Fours *here*. You might say that, among frequenters of a psychological internet forum, there are a few (maybe significant, maybe not) more female INFP Fours than male INFP Fours. : Nonetheless, we need to return to my first question, because the diatribe above follows MY interpretation of the Four. With my perspective, I fail to see a gender predominance. In addition, I have not adopted my criteria for identifying a male Four to be different from my criteria for identifying a female Four. With your definition of "Four," however, you may see a gender predominance. So, how do you decide whether someone is a Four? : ^(oo)^ Yes, Yes there are biases all around aren't there? Biases in the sample of a given group plus biases in perspective and standards of observation. Sociology 101: oh that people could be more like blocks of aluminum. Eh, well on second thought .... Your comment about variance of type definition for enneagram authors is quite disconcerting. If true it simply means that the e-gram has no value as a system for understanding personality.
