Yes, that was it, the shooting in Dunblane that caused the change in the law.
The long ones are called rifles or shotguns and they're so called "hunting
weapons" as opposed to hand-held weapons like pistols and revolvers. Generally
just about everywhere it's easier to get a license for a rifle or a shotgun
(or like in some states, not needing a license) than for a smaller gun.

The reason I'd hate to carry a gun for self-defense is that if you carry it,
a) You'll have to be ready to use it *for real*, no aiming
at feet there, you'll miss anyway and I wouldn't want to kill anyone and
b) You'll risk losing it to the person threatening you, in which case you go from
hell to a hot place.

Generally you'll have to have 10 feet distance before you
can use a quick-draw knife and at least 15 feet to draw a gun--assuming it really
is placed so you can draw it quickly and know what you're doing. If someone jumps
at you when you can see the attacker coming, is next to you already, you've lost
the chance of using the gun. If you draw it in that situation, you'll risk ending up
shooting yourself. I think the effect guns have on crime is deterring, much
like burglar alarms and such. The criminal mind rather chooses the easy target.
